The TTC (The Toronto Transit Commission)

Everyone knows The TTC's taglines are The Better Way and Ride The Rocket. However, when anyone visits the the official TTC.ca website, we often find it is difficult to navigate and is at times almost useless for what we need at the moment. The wiki pages listed below for each and every transit station, streetcar line, bus route can become our Better Way to a better website for all things TTC. Some websites have also been made by the community to supplement the official site maintained by the TTC, such as http://crazedmonkey.com/toronto-transit-map/ and http://stopfinder.com.

It is technically possible within this wiki to complete every wish list item that Transit Camp came up with as to what the TTC.ca should be doing for its riders. It is only a matter of time, and not technology, until these transit wiki pages collectively fill up with those useful and fun tidbits of rider knowledge that are bottled up in our heads, like which bus line has the singing bus driver(!), plus the interconnections between routes, what elevators or escalator are down for service just for today, or answering the question, Should I use GO Transit or Viva instead of TTC today?

The Current Situation

What today makes up The Toronto Transit Commission began life as the Toronto Railway Company, a private company in 1920's Toronto. After being taken over by the city, the TTC has added new transit lines along route corridors with lower and lower population densities consequently raising fares to subsidize those decisions ever since.

On Monday July 16, 2007, City Council decided to defer the decision on new Toronto Taxes until after the Provincial Election on October 10. This wait and see approach has split City Council and Torontonians.

Without some out of the box creativity in approaching how the funding of the Toronto Transit Commission happens, we now have the prospect of TTC Service Cuts in excess of 50 routes, plus the suggestion of shutting down The Sheppard Subway Line all together.

On Monday September 10, 2007, Councillor Michael Thompson hosted a Scarborough Public Consultation on TTC Service Cuts at the Scarborough Civic Centre seeking input from the public on what City Council should ultimately do: cut service, raise fares, raise taxes or whatever. About 150 people turned out and made presentations for 2 1/2 hours.

On Wednesday September 12, 2007, there was a second and final Public Consultation at Toronto City Hall to decide what to recommend City Council and the TTC should do without the asked for 100 Million plus dollars they need for next year's operating budget. The Commission voted unanimously to raise ticket/token fares by $0.15 to $2.25 and Metropass fares by $9.25 to $109. Adult cash fare will remain at $2.75.
