Small dogs and their owner enjoy some frisbee on the Russell IM FielThe Russell Intramural Sports Field is one of the larger fields (if not the largest) on campus, but shrunk in 2005 with the construction of the Marya Welch Tennis Center. Because of its large size, the field is used for a lot of special events, such as ultimate frisbee invites, and routine UC Davis rugby practice and rugby games. The field features a tall, narrow concrete wall for lacrosse players to practice throwing and catching. The field is also a shortcut for people walking from campus to Oak Avenue.

This is also the location for the Davis Boffer Club.

Proposed construction

As of Oct. 2016, word got out that the university is proposing to cut into the historic view that is Russell Field by constructing yet even more student housing and campus buildings. The proposed construction would also destroy Howard, Toomey, and A Street Field. Not only would this destroy very beloved as well as historic open expanses of land in Davis, it would negatively impact all the sports teams that use these fields constantly for games and practice. These sports range from soccer, frisbee, and football to lacrosse, rugby, and kite-flying.
