Davis Retail Store

Goodwill in Davis is occupying the space where All Things Right and Relevant and the Wash Mill used to be. The Wash Mill was forced to close in January 2013 when the landlord would not renew their lease because Goodwill wanted their space. Some find it ironic that a company dedicated to helping lower-income people would deprive East Davis of its only laundromat, given that many people walked to the Wash Mill. The Vanguard wrote three articles on the subject. (here, here, and here). The Davis Enterprise published an editorial by Meg Sloss, in which she states, "shame on you to the landlord of the Manor and the CEOs of the Goodwill. They both have given into greed and selfishness at the expense of their customers and another business owner." Quite a few folks are planning to boycott this store.

*The Goodwill "Donation Location" in the El Macero Shopping Center looks pretty dead every time I go by (two-four times a week to shop at Nugget); based on an editorial by Meg Sloss and talking to the former owners of Wash Mill the day they received their eviction notice from "Goodwill," I'd recommend donating at ASPCA on Third Street instead http://www.yolospca.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=51&Itemid=76. Their website says they need donations, which won't fund demolition of a mom and pop laundromat!! —BrianKenyon

Davis Donation Xpress Locations

The Goodwill Donation Xpress is a donation center for Goodwill. They do not sell anything, but it is a very nice place to donate. A boutique-style Goodwill Retail store opened April 2013 on E. 8th Street; the nearest regular retail stores are located in Woodland and West Sacramento.

Things accepted at Goodwill Donation Xpress:

• General: Clothes, books, shoes, toys, dishes, bedding, bicycles, etc.
• E-Waste (such as computers & computer monitors, TVs, laptops, etc.): California ID req'd for TVs, computer monitors, laptops, etc. for attendant to fill out a state recycling form
• Furniture: Depends. Must be inspected by attendant to make sure it's in resellable quality (no rips, tears, stains, etc.).

NOT Accepted:

• Cribs, car seats, baby bouncers, high chairs, etc.: anything that supports the weight of a child - cannot be accepted due to recall laws
• Mattresses/Beds
• Large appliances (washers, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, ACs, etc.)
• Large exercise equipment, metal desks, console stereos
• Spray cans, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, hazardous materials

West Sacramento A new Goodwill opened in West Sacramento near the corner of Harbor and West Capital Ave. It's got a TON of great stuff, but at Goodwill prices (those being set pricing that is more expensive than some thrift stores...for instance, all jeans are $4, all dresses are $5. This store is significantly larger than the one in Woodland and has a much better selection. It has tons of printers, appliances, sporting goods, etc.

There used to be a Goodwill in Woodland on Main Street, but it closed in 2014. Do not confuse the address with the Goodwill offices located at 120 West Main Street -tz

2011-06-19 10:40:44   This place is pretty great. I hit two birds with one stone by donating and getting rid of my e-waste when I moved (vs having to go to the landfill and another donation site). The girl working there was very nice and helped get all my stuff inside. —equitonic

2013-07-26 15:05:55   IIm voting with my dollars (or not, in this case) and haven't shopped in this shopping center since finding out about the lease atrocity. Shame! I didn't use the laundromat but small business is being pushed aside all over. Pretty soon we won't have any small, interesting, independent shops. Sad. —KatyMartin

"2013-10-12 18:16:55"   Oh my god, this place is soooooooooooo good for Halloween! They had tons of stuff! Extremely cheap costumes! Those "costumes in a bag" you normally get for $65 at a Halloween store? $20 here. They mix in the regular Goodwill clothes that could work for costumes in with the "storebought" stuff. TONS of things. Wigs. Masks. Makeup. Hats. I found corsets for $5 and $10 and leather jackets and pants ranging from $5 to $20. Really good deals and shopping here—especially since we don't seem to have a Halloween store in Davis in 2013. Excellent haul! —JenniferRutherford

2014-06-23 15:21:27   This is regarding the Davis location. The Woodland location was shut down months ago. The Davis location is a cluttered mess with outrageous prices and limited selection. The prices are comparable to what you would see at the nearby TJ Maxx or Target. Save your money and go to the other thrift stores in town or by new. —nkristis

2024-05-30 20:52:13   Working at this store in 2015 was by far the most abusive job I ever had. There was constant racism and sexual harassment. The first day I worked there, the one other black man that worked there immediately started making fun of Mexican people and women's looks. He also tried to tell my coworkers I was not really black, when everyone in my family is black. (This lead to my coworkers repeatedly arguing about and making fun of my skin color.) He later got fired for repeatedly sexually harassing white women. One of those women was a manager who had slept with him, when it is against their management contract to fraternize with underling employees. That same manager said she would kill me and cut my head off, compared me to Chewbacca from Star Wars who is an animal, repeatedly yelled at me from behind while I was working to startle me and tried to blame me for it, and tried to convince people I was some kind of sex predator - when SHE was the one who had slept with the person who was actually sexually harassing people by hitting on EVERY woman, even if they didn't want him to. This woman had to leave the store, of course. Another woman that worked there would stay out all night partying, come in to work in the morning still drunk. One time, she danced up to my friend who was a regular customer and she brushed him on the crotch and he had to file a sexual misconduct report with the management. Everyone in the store gossiped about me to try to get me in trouble, even people I actually got along well with. The entire experience has left me traumatized about workplace politics even many years later - I am still seeking relief through psychological therapy. They also steal time from employees by making you work when you are on break - one of the first days I worked there, they interrupted by legally mandated 15 minute break to make me perform multiple tasks in a row. Years later, I received a check for a class action lawsuit where over 100 employees had alleged the exact same crime, wage theft. The radio would play overly sexual music and make employees and customers uncomfortable, people would say "nigga" and totally ignore how I felt about it, guy employees would talk about guns and crime casually (one man literally gang-banging on his coworkers), scaring myself and other women that worked there. If I had recorded all of this, I could have easily reported this place to OHSA (Occupational Safety and Health Association) for labor law violations. I will never forgive the general manager of this store for hiring these people and exposing me to them, or the company in general for its abusive culture. If you go here, please steal as much as possible for me. —averykirkland
